Capital Monument Works opened in the spring of 1998 in a converted dairy building on Hill Croft Farm Road, just east of the Sacramento River. Its founder — Heather Seaton's uncle Raymond — had spent his working life at a monument yard in Barre, Vermont and wanted to bring that discipline west.
Heather joined the studio in 2003 to draft designs, took over management in 2008, and became sole owner in 2015. The workshop has grown to a four-person crew and a quarter-acre yard, but the building, the tools and the way we quote a job have not.

Owner & Lead Designer. Twenty-one years at the drafting table. UC Davis, BFA in Studio Art, 2001. Certified by the Monument Builders of North America.
Master Stonecutter. Twenty-nine years with the studio. Trained by Raymond Seaton. Runs the sandblast and lettering booth.
Draftsperson & Restoration Lead. Twelve years with the studio. Specializes in period-correct restoration of nineteenth-century marble.
Setting Foreman. Nine years with the studio. Sets and levels every stone we deliver across fourteen counties.
Studio Manager. Six years with the studio. Every quote, invoice and cemetery permit passes through her office.
Studio Dog. A very slow border collie who has never turned down a visitor's ear scratch. Best consultant we have.
